Kure Beach, NC
Kure Beach is the southern-most town on Pleasure Island. The town itself is pretty small but just to the south is the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. This has public beaches for both foot and vehicles, trails, boat launch, and an aquarium.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
This is an area of protected land that features many different activities and services. The area is named after a fort used by the confederacy during the Civil War. It was meant to protect the mouth of the Cape Fear River and the city of Wilmington. Now, the area has beach access and amenities, a branch of the North Carolina Aquarium, and boat launches. At Federal Point are the Rocks at Fort Fisher and the Zeke's Island Nature Preserve. Within the area is the Fort Fisher-Southport Ferry. This takes travelers on NC 211 from Fort Fisher to Southport across the river.Â
